busy summer days

I have a friend who said what she loved most about summer was just lazying around doing nothing. Well, first if we tried that Rose would read, David would feel ignored, David would bug Rose, and they would bicker. All day long. And, I don't like rattling around on the house. On the other hand, yesterday was a lot of people and places.

Rose went to drama camp. David and I went to jazzercise and swim lessons. Then we had lunch with mom, and I took a nap while mom entertained David. So far, so normal.

Then my sister, nieces, two more adults, and three more kids showed up. We love them, they were lots of fun, and we all went down to the pool after the requisite sun screening chaos. But, David and I could only play in the pool half an hour before we had to hustle through the shower, change, snack process, and drive 40 minutes back to the zoo.

Why the zoo? A friend has one child in zoo camp and one child at the doctor's; she needed help with pick up. Since I had just had three friends cover for me while my hot water broke (um yeah), I owed the universe. Besides, David wanted to play with Marlyn. Amazingly, we got to the zoo on time. David and Marlyn spent 40 minutes playing Star Wars in the African village and turning the hippo sculpture into a slide.

In the meantime, Rose was having Daddy/Rose time at the Science museum. Then John took her to her dance class, and David and I met the entire family at dance class at 5:00. (By entire family I mean 5 grandparents, my sister, and a random friend.)

John and I spent a frantic 15 minutes ordering dinner and coordinating with our dinner guests before we settled in to watch Rose's dance performance. This was her last dance class. Maybe not ever, but certainly with this teacher. I liked the costumes. I liked how hard they were concentrating. Great art it was not.

Rush home, get dinner on the table, greet our fabulous friends from out of town. Ooh, it is so much fun to discuss student peccadilloes with other teachers. "What do you do when a student is unbearably rude in class?" "What about cheating?" Our children played right up to bedtime with their children.

But wait, the fun hasn't stopped. I got Rose and David to bed, did my share of the dishes, and drove off to Danika's house to watch So You Think You Can Dance with her. Way for more fun to kibbitz together.

So that's socializing with 24 different people in 6 different locations. That's too much.
