conversations between mothers and daughters

Yesterday Deirdre was telling me that Deborah Tannen says mothers and daughters mostly discuss appearance. So, I thought I'd track what Rose and I talk about.

Rose's health concerns

If you have a tickle in your throat, get a drink of water.

I'm so sorry you have dry chapped hands. I'm so sorry the lotion doesn't seem to help. I'm so sorry you bumped your head, your hand. . .

Poetry

Soon after David woke me up, Rose ran into the room and showed me a poetry book she had discovered last night. It's Caroline Kennedy's A Family of Poems which Deirdre gave me for Christmas a couple years ago. Rose sat on my bed and read me poetry for half an hour. We discussed the ones we'd heard before, the ones we love--"The Eagle" tops both of our lists, but listening to her made me a new fan of Neruda's Ode to Socks, the new vocabulary (incandescent), and the cheating rhyme Blake tried to throw in there--eye and symmetry, I mean, please.

Don't fight with your brother

Hands in the air! I don't care whose book it is or who had it first. Everyone downstairs for breakfast.

It doesn't matter who gets to the door first. I have the key.

Life Management

Go pee before we go.

Get your coat on please.

Put down the book, go pee, and get your coat on.

First aid

Rose took a first aid course this afternoon, so she told us all about how to help someone choking, and then she bandaged me up when I was bleeding and took care of my broken arm.

Talking about first aid isn't typical but discussing whatever she learned that day is.

Jokes, riddles, and randomness

Why did the frog cross the road?
He was holding hands with the chicken.

How many surrealists does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
What's a surrealist?
Fish

Is it Maimonides or Maimonides?
N, What brought him to mind?

Nope, nothing about clothes, hair, or weight there.
