Her friend Jasper is playing the violin, and Rose wanted to in the same group as Jasper but didn't want the competition of being on the same instrument.

What a lucky lucky choice. The cello glows. The tone is deep and rich. I had never had much feeling about the cello either way before this, but to have such wonderful sound filling my house (well except when I have to plug my ears from the squeaking) is a luxury.
