For Girls Only: A Heart-to-Heart Talk on Growing Up

This two-part class is recommended for girls 10 to 12 years old and a parent or guardian. The sessions focus on the physical changes of puberty and menstruation, what girls need to know about boys, social issues and sexuality. The class is two hours in length on two separate days.

The goal is to create an opportunity for pre-teens and a trusted adult to receive information together in an engaging format and relaxed atmosphere. We emphasize family communication and resources to support young people on their journey through adolescence.

I thought I had done a pretty good job covering the this is how your body will be changing speech along with the this is how babies are made one, but first, multiple ways of learning are good, second the speaker was outstanding, and third there were straight out things I had missed. For instance, it had never occurred to me to reassure my daughter that a tampon won't get lost in your body and end up coming out your ear. It has also never occurred to me to tell her big truths--changing bodies are a human experience. It's a big deal, but it's part of being human. And, I want this to go well for you. I mean, duh, but having the rather dramatic presenter emphasize that the woman who has come with you today and, in fact, a whole web of support, want this to go well for you made me teary eyed.
