I don't know WHY I'm surprised by the Edgars - it's hope more than anything that keeps me thinking every year that i will understand the vote and the winners.

This year, I not only didn't know the winner in one category I had NEVER HEARD of the book or the author. Given that I read about 300 mysteries a year, maybe 250, and that I see dozens more and know about hundreds more, this comes as a surprise. The other winner in the other major category I tried, gave up after 30 pages handing it to Stu saying "I think you will like this". Not bad, just not for me. But every year I think and hope and assume I know something about the genre and think and hope and assume that the best books (yes, by my lights) will be nominated and then will actually win.

right.

Tomorrow I'll be much nicer and more gracious about it. I AM, mind you, pleased that some good books/stories/writers won, I am. But right now I'm about where I was when SJ's ABSENT FRIENDS didn't even merit a nomination. I'm pouting and pissed off and will be that way for a while.
