2008-06-03 7:01 PM I didn't expect THAT reaction Mood: Oh WOW Read/Post Comments (5) |
It's 7 pm on June 3, 2008. I want to register that because I think, no, i know that history just was made.
i knew we'd have that to deal with either way, but I'm in the back room of the apartment at the computer while CNN is blasting away in the living room (I just had to finish something quick here) and hearing Wolf Blitzer's voice announce that CNN is projecting that Barack Obama has enough delegates to have won the Democratic nomination. I burst into tears. Anyone else? I'm currently reading a new book that is a collection of letters to and from Jackie Robinson. Those who only vaguely know who this man is, this is the first African-American man to play Major League Baseball. He "broke the color barrier" when he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers and played in the majors for about 12 years before retiring in the 50s. The FIFTIES people.Brown v. Board of Education '50s. Not the englightened um, yeah right, like there was EVER an englightened decade regarding race in America. Jackie Robinson was a fierce, bold, outspoken man who never let anyone off the hook regarding segregation and racism. His letters to people like Richard Nixon (in early years a supporter of "civil rights) and other politicians, all sorts of leaders and newsmakers are stunning reminders of just how a few years ago, what happened today was, well, flat out impossible. Unimaginable. Ridiculous. godDAMN i wish he were alive to see this. it's not over. there's so much that must be done in America, we know that. I'm not seeing this as any sort of big deal victory. But I'm 55 years old. I did not expect this in my lifetime. it's 2008, Barack Hussein Obama, a man of mixed race- his mother, white from Kansas, his father, black from Kenya - is running for President. Does that make you cry? It sure as shit is making me cry. Read/Post Comments (5) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
