Great lines from a great book

In the past several days, i have been pretty astonished that I could read. Concentration goes out the window, doesn' it, when Big Things happen.

But I had just received THE SIEGE by Stephen White, a long time, very special friend of mine whose work I have admired from day one. And at times, in books like KILL ME and THE PROGRAM I've been wholly blown away.
THE SIEGE is such a damn good book. Lately, i find myself saying "more later" and never getting back to later.

But before I really do go galoomphing off in all directions, I just wanted to show you these few lines. They really did make me stop. And read them again. Without giving you the plot of this gripping novel, which I had trouble putting down (me! a thriller!) and not even giving you the background of the person speaking, I just wanted to quote a few lines. I think in only a few lines, so much is being said here.

"When America is threatened, she loses her capacity, or at least her desire, to weigh the plight of others. To see the lives of others.

To see us. Our lives. Our rights. Our humanity."

Damn, Stephen.
