Local Wildlife, Word Counts, Chavez Speech

Saw a three-foot iguana sunning itself by the canal accross from our front lawn the other day. At least, I think it was an iguana. (Green and orange, big orange spikes.) Given how polluted some of these canals are, I suppose its possible that all manner of unclassifiable mutant tropical hybrids are breeding down there, so I guess I can't be too sure what it was.

Interesting, though.

Got another 400 words done on the steampunk robot story last night. Which makes, like, two days over the course of a three day period that I got small snippets of writing done.

Strange that this feels like an accomplishment now, since there were days at Clarion this summer where I wrote entire 4 to 5,000 word short stories within a single 24-hour period. And granted, I'd have to not write for the next several days to recover, at which point the next deadline came up and I repeated cycle, but still...

Oh, and you might have heard Hugo Chavez gave a speech at the U.N. today, in which he referred to President Bush as "the devil", a fact that's been reported incessantly in pretty much every bit of incessant media reportage, in news items like, "Coming up....Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Refers to Bush as 'the Devil' in a speech at the U.N."

Now, I actually watched the speech on TV and it was obvious to me--as it clearly was to the assembled audience of diplomats, many of whom were giggling furiosuly throughout that part of the speech--that he was joking, elaborately crossing himself and pantomiming smelling sulphur, and that part of the intended subtext was to parody Bush's fundamentalist religious fervor.

In the same part of the speech he said, for example, that Bush needed to see a psychiatrist, so the theme he was driving at was fairly clear.

(And hey, since the Bush administration openly backed a failed military coup against Chavez a few years ago during which Chavez was kidnapped and almost killed, I think the man's earned the right to make fun of Bush any way he wants.)

Oh, and of course my first thought was...

What, Bush isn't the devil?
