Buffalo Gal
Judi Griggs

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. Welcoming the new

I woke up in the same bed, am sitting at the same computer and the dog is snoring in the living room about as loud as she did in '03.
I have the same resolutions as every year (produce more, eat less) which will likely meet the same resolution.
But somehow the simple act of flipping the calendar page gives a sense of newness and hope. I find it oddly exciting that, unlike many other years, my desk calendar is almost blank.
Posting the pictures of our New Year's Open House. I'm strangely assured to look at the group that made it until midnight and note that I had not yet met most of them at this time last year.
I love having an absurdly long holiday card list and the melancholy ritual of reaching out to those separated by time and geography.
I sometimes envy the stability and community other family members enjoy in staying in the area where we grew up. But looking at the New Year's pictures and the two volume card list, I don't think I could make the trade.
By the end of this year, Jessica, the driving force of my last 21 years (not including the 10 month pregnancy), will be finished with college and entering the adult job market.
I'm going to do what it takes to have a book sold and step in from the edges of the writing community.
I can't wait to see what else 2004 will bring. I'm ready.
