Buffalo Gal
Judi Griggs

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. Buffalo bound

The turtlenecks and hoodies are folded and ready to pack. What kind of a family travels from a warm coastal island to Buffalo for a week in January?
Southern-born Charlie has been watching the Weather Channel religiously and adding to his clothing stacks. By the time he finishes layering he could pass for one of the Macy's Parade balloons.
Jessica is just happy to be going back to college after five weeks home. Last night she was in that odd transitional stage wearing both a ski jacket and flip flops when we went to dinner.
I know it's going to be face-hurting cold, but I don't plan to spend much time outside. My tobogganing days are well behind me.
The car sits in the morning sun blissfully unaware of the salt, sleet, sand and snow assault it's about to take.
Charlie is going to complain about the weather the entire time we're there, but it won't stop him for visiting our favorite relatives and restaurants. He'll get quiet on the last day and pout all the way back to the sunshine.
So we'll go back again at Easter time. And again in the summer. And probably for Thanksgiving. And again next January or February. Everytime we come home, we realize more what we left behind.
