Buffalo Gal
Judi Griggs

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. The right to copy

I know the law. I know that a writer's work doesn't need to be officially registered to be protected. I know that putting a copyright blurb at the end of this piece is at best redundant and looks pretentious.
Until recently, I'd laugh at anyone else who made such a rookie show.
I was doing deeper research on a topic I had blogged a few weeks earlier. One of the writers I found agreed completely with my previously stated position. Cut and paste exactly. When I contacted him, he apologized geuninely and said he knew about protections on books, magazines and "real" websites but thought blogs were just "out there."
"It's not like you're getting paid for it," he emailed after removing the purloined prose from his site.
I started feverishly searching unique phrases from my blog and would like to report a vast international intellectual property theft ring.
But it was only two more apparently very nice people who sheepishly explained they thought the web was free.
Pieces here are not finished copy, but raw writing McNuggets dropped at random between the real work. Still, they are my McNuggets.
If the little notice prevents the next innocent larceny, here it is...
