Buffalo Gal Judi Griggs I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. 2004-04-12 10:42 AM Happy Dingus Day! For those of you who don't have your pussywillows and cologne poised for a big night of food and drink, let me fill you in.
Dingus (or Dyngus) Day is the Polish bookend of the Lenten season to Mardi Gras. Sort of the equivalent of St. Patrick's Day (without an hint of saints or sanctimony). It's the post-Lenten blow out that occurs on the Monday and Tuesday after Easter. A lot of the nuance has obviously been lost in translation, but basically it's an excuse to drink and eat to excess with the added amusement of men chasing women with pussywillows and water or cologne on day one, and women getting to do the reverse on day two -- like a Sadie Hawksinski dance. A friend at work recently admited to my daughter that she was Polish "but don't tell anyone." Jennine said that most of her mother's family is Polish and the girl seemed surprised. The poor co-worker probably never celebrated Dingus Day or been to a Pulaski parade. Neither has Jennine for that matter. But her Mom can swing a pussywillow switch.
