Buffalo Gal Judi Griggs I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. 2004-05-31 11:24 PM Through another's eyes My trips are always adventures overcrowded with people and things to which I have no access on this island.
This is a long and varied one including family, business, some new destinations and, most important, the opportunity to see the places and people which matter to me through the eyes of a new friend. Being French, Anne has no cultural reference point as to why the Bills matter in Buffalo or the innkeeper in Pennsylvania couldn't believe we didn't want to book a tour of the Crayola Experience. Things that I'd taken for granted ... Niagara Falls for example... will be new and exciting again. Things that enthrall me... the Rodin exhibit at Albright-Knox.. will likely pale within her Louvre reference. We'll hear Rust Belt rock and roll at a Jersey dive and caberet jazz at The Algonquin. The myriad hours we'll spend in the car should be enough to convince her of the varied landscape and peoples of just our East Coast (or that she was crazy to accept the challenge of my American Romp). I'm again surprised by the warmth and welcome extended by dear old friends. After almost 30 years of my waiting, we're going to get to hear my high school heartthrob play the guitar, on the river behind his house with his wife. Another friend is sharing a recent windfall by putting us up in New York City. My brother and his wife have opened up their beautiful home for several school nights with Lauren and Kaitlyn still in school. There is no way to expect such things could possibly happen until others amaze you with the possibilities. We leave in the morning. First stop D.C. So much in the the news creates fear and doubt about my country. I have to believe this journey will show me something better.
