I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. Losing power, losing it

I am not going to reset the microwave, stove, cable boxes, vcrs or alarm clocks again until hurricane season is over.
For the next month or so I'll rely on watches, others and relative sun position to approximate arrivals and departures.
I recognize our problems in coastal south Georgia are miniscule in comparison to the incredible toll these storms have taken on Floridians and, particularly, the islands. I know how lucky we are to be dealing with only yard debris, school closings and power outtages.
But for all concerned -- enough already. Memo to Mother Nature, God or whoever has meterologic duty this month --- leave Florida (and her neighbor directly to the north) alone. They already have Jeb Bush as a governor. They've suffered enough.
You never see the Weather Channel broadcasting live from Wyoming, ditto Montana and Idaho. When's the last time you saw anything about the Dakotas or Kansas? How is that it that Utah stays under the radar? That's a lot of untapped territory. Hundreds of thousands of acres, millions of homes with VCRs that were likely last programmed in the last millenium.
At the first hurricane warning we stocked up on water, batteries and plywood. The second time we just picked up a few more batteries and candles. The third time, we stocked up on beer, wine and mixers.
This last time it was only duct tape ... to cover the blinking lights when the power comes back on.
