Buffalo Gal Judi Griggs I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. 2004-10-04 8:30 AM For sale: writer The Buffalo News offers an online service whereby it will search the news and classified ads on your keywords and deliver the result to your inbox daily.
This is my hometown paper and the site of my first reporting job. We have substantial famiy ties in Buffalo and expect to eventually circle back and relocate there. My news section search terms are the last names of relatives, thus far much more notorious for real estate transactions and school sports, than crime and passion. My classified terms involve the neighborhood where we would eventually like to buy a home. When I filled in the onscreen form with the necessary keywords I still had three boxes left, so I threw in some job possibilities -- "editor" "public relations" and "writer." Buffalo is a town you leave because of the job siutation, I can't say I ever actually expected to find a job. But in the past year of watching, Public Relations has popped up in the body text of a few commissioned sales ads, including one for a collection agency. (I never considered having that kind of relation with the public). An academic press actually offered a copy "editor" job a few months back. But "writer" pops up almost every day. Usually it's someone selling a computer with a CD "writer" and often a type "writer" in a garage sale listing. Thus I start my every writing day checking the morning email and discovering the only utility a writer has is as a mechnical device in a cheap ad. I think I need to change the search terms.
