Buffalo Gal
Judi Griggs

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. Slip, sliding away

"You know the nearer your destination, the more you slip sliding away."
Paul Simon

I've felt that way since coming home to Buffalo. I've wanted it for so long but as it's actually happening, so many of the things that were supposed to come with it are still just out of reach..a half life in small quarters with no immediate family.
It was just too cold to walk to half mile to work this morning. The streets weren't plowed, but scant traffic was moving slowly.
Ice and snow remained on my car wheels from the night before, but I ignored it and started the engine.
I swear I eased into the left turn from Delaware to Allen, but the car set on its own sideways path. I was lucky there were no cars in the oncoming lane. I was lucky there were no cars parked at the meters. I was lucky I remembered how to handle a skid without thinking about it. The course corrected right before the CRV met the parking meters.
I crawled into a nearly empty parking garage humbled.
If the ice on the tires doesn't melt, I'll take a cab home.
