Buffalo Gal Judi Griggs I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. 2005-04-05 10:37 AM Opening day The satellite radio is set up in the living room and there will be a large bag of peanuts next to his chair within a few hours.
The Cardinals open against the Astros tonight and Charlie's world begins anew. I forwarded him an email this morning about the season line-up for the Bisons, the minor league club in Buffalo with a stadium is a few scant blocks from the apartment we hope to take. But that's about a future date and a Cleveland Indians farm club, not HIS Cards. He didn't even get excited about the Tim Russert Bobblehead day. Charlie was imprinted with a Redbird at birth. Our Realtor "readjusted" our living space, eliminating many cluttered items we use every day (nightstands and reading lamps are for wimps who want to read or set down a cup of tea, if we REALLY want to sell this place we WILL surrender convenience to open, possible spaces). Thus, Charlie's Cardinal Room, decorated with the Gashouse Gang memorabilia that was the currency of our courtship (yes, a framed and matted Dizzy Dean autograph IS the way to this man's heart and the Frankie Fritsch pretty much sealed the deal) is now packed in boxes in the garage. One small display case remains as an "interest item." But nothing can contain his actual fervor. No one who knows Charlie Griggs would ever dare to describe him as chipper, but on Opening Day he is actually darn chipper. Today is the day we could sell the house, get a large settlement on a suit that hasn't been filed or sell the book I haven't finished yet. Anything can happen. And if none of that actually occurs, but if the Cards beat the Astros, that will be just fine too. Copyright 2005 Judi Griggs Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
