Buffalo Gal
Judi Griggs

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. Guess who is coming to dinner?

Literally.
Charlie and I are taking our turn to host the Buffalo Supper Club this week. Fascinating people. Interesting food. We're not doing one of those costumed, scripted mystery dinners, our mystery is simply "who is actually gong to show up?"
The invitations I made were rather clever, but would have beem moreso had I assigned the correct sequence to our phone number for the RSVP. And the first email announcement of the event by our usually ever-efficient (nothing like me) organizer, had the wrong date. We are, of course, both professional communicators.
So we're setting the table for 16 with eight place settings in abeyance.
My first phone number, covering the entire first decade of my existence, was TX2-9906 (we said them like that then, and it was a party line). When we moved to the country it became 542-9066 - which is still my parent's number. I know my brother's number, it's only changed twice in 15 years of marriage. Ditto for Aunt Judy and Uncle Bob who have about 30 years with the same home number.
But I've lost track of the number of home numbers I've had. Throw in the cell, pager and office numbers and I could fully populate a small town directory -- if I could remember any of the numbers.
The older I get, the longer I try a number on to see if it will fit. The advent of cell phones with auto-dial personal directories has helped extend those periods indefinately.
Yes, we've had this home number for almost five months now, but I'm still getting used to it. It's not one of my better numbers (no 8s or repeating digits). I knew my new office number within a week (842-2222), but let's face it , that one is a gimmee.
In reality, I'm not sure we'd have a home phone if it didn't come bundled with the DSL. With our cells, it's the third phone in a two-person house. It's not like the cats need to order take out.
But if they could, they'd probably do better at remembering the number.
