I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. Facing the hordes

When the huddling masses were throbbing against the doors of the discount electronics stores at 5:00 this morning. I was sleeping. Ditto for the 6 a.m. mob at Target.
I have a geniune unclaimed-by-obligation day off and I made a deliberate choice not to sacrifice it to the gods of consumerism.
We've got a long Christmas list this year and limited resources, this means shopping smart and avoiding fervor. Thanksgiving Friday at the mall is the defination of fervor.
We planned to see the John Cusack movie this afternoon and Jen and I are going to see a play this evening. Both activities are within walking distance.
It could have been a victory for art over commerce, if not for the damn coupon.
Any serious crafter knows the usual craft store one-item coupon is 40 percent off. We lay in wait for the irregular release of such coupons to buy major items. The occasional 50 percent off script is manna from heaven.
But there it was, in my Thursday paper, jumping out from the page and screaming - 60 percent off one item. One day only. At my favorite craft store.
I tried to be strong. I set it to the side and continued reading the paper, only to discover fate had doubled my insert quotient. With Jen in town we EACH had our own 60 percent coupon -- it was fate.
So we're plunging headlong into the retail fray this morning ... but will be back in time for the movie.
