Buffalo Gal
Judi Griggs

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. It's good to touch the slick, gray slush of home

Nothing like a quick trip out of town, with plenty of airport thinking time built in, to make you appreciate the world outside your door.
(Well not exactly right outside. You see, the occupants of the apartment between ours and the elevator have tremendously unjustified pride in their flair of interior design. So much so that it has spilled into the common hallway with an "adventurous" arrangement of red and green metallic spikes is a tall vase that hooks at my coat and could send Scrooge back to the counting chamber in it's visual audacity. I know I'm running a little off topic, but if you're wondering what I really want for Christmas and you happen to be in our hallway... the vase looks pretty fragile and people do tend to be accident prone this time of year...)
But other than the Merry Metallic Monster, it's hard not to smile about how well things are fitting.
I've been back a in Buffalo a year now. While I would not have believed it 10, eight or even six months ago -- a great job, family, friends, cottage and apartment have all finally come together.
I can't imagine a better place for simple celebration. Friday night we went with Andalyn and Dave to hear DoDo Green at the Anchor Bar. Sunday it was soup kitchen cooking with Mary and Studio Arena with Jim and Lisa. The piano has never sounded better than at Howard's Speakeasy Monday night. The outdoor temperatures may be in single digits, but the holiday season is heating up with most of the days Jen will be here double and triple booked with friends, family and events.
My Georgia friends ask how I could possibly consider a place so cold. My Houston friends can't imagine me happy in a small city. People who live in Manhattan can't seem to understand why anyone would consider anywhere else.
But Buffalo is home. Maybe it's less than perfect, but so am I. And I'll never get closer to it than here.
