Buffalo Gal Judi Griggs I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. 2005-12-16 6:00 AM The season of perpetual celebration I was so wrapped up in the ritual of assembling scarf, hat, gloves and coat buttoning while running for the elevator, I almost didn't notice...
The Merry Metallic Monster is gone. (See 12/14 post if you fail to understand the moment of this occasion) Who says there is no such thing as Santa Claus? And in the chaos of ice storms, cancelled flights and fellow airport waitees feeling considerably less than jolly last night, our daughter Jen made it to town with minor delays -- and her luggage was with her! The holidays are officially here. In case there was any question, the Fun Committee at work released a specific schedule of non-traditional frivolity stretching over the next week or so. The Boss apparently understands a secret to herding creative folk is knowing we play as hard as we work. Several of my colleagues have already discreetly cued me in the real rules for the "Happy Hour Gift Exchange" next Tuesday -- "bring a bottle, nobody wants to get stuck with a cookie jar or candle." As the new kid on the block, I'm running to the duty-free shop in Canada to snag my contribution and stay within the recommended value guidleines. Yes, Virginia, one of the greatest advantages of living at the largest unprotected land border in the Free World is 100 proof Absolut for $12 a bottle. Early morning at the office today, but I'll be out by 5 sharp and on my way to see David Sedaris' "Santaland Diaries" at one of the theatres just up the street. There will also be a church concert, Holiday Pops with Marvin Hamlisch, the TransSiberian Orchestra and a couple movies on the schedule over the next few weeks, as well as parties and family gatherings. Tomorrow night we're going to the Bills game to keep the frivolity factor in check. But the tickets were a gift and Jen is about to learn what folks in Buffalo add to a thermos of tea to keep warm. Tis the season. Copyright 2005 Judi Griggs Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
