Buffalo Gal

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. Stretching the solstice

On paper this is supposed to the the shortest day (and thus the longest night) of the year - but try telling that to anyone with an office job in these last few days before Christmas.
It feels like the daytime hours are slugging through a cosmic kettle of pea soup.
I was never great in higher math (fact is I pretty much gave up after the multiplication tables), so I have no idea how contrary realties can co-exist.
Another one that stymies me - how does the list of things to do before Christmas get longer as Christmas gets closer when you spend all non-work and waking hours trying to make it shorter?
Every business email answered today with an out-of-office reminder, every absurdly cheery voicemail saying "I'm gone, I'll deal with you next year" makes the business day go just a little bit longer.
Tomorrow will be worse and Friday excruciating.
Next week, in contrast, will be a hoot.
It's the American "gap week" -- four days of minimal expectation of anything, the assumption that no one else is working and the chance to catch up on everything. It's the gift of an empty inbox for the New Year.
If I can just get through the 79,200 long workday seconds before the holiday begins...
