Buffalo Gal

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. Out of control

My cousin Cheryl and I get along so well because we share an intense love for our families, a passion for scrapbooking, an off-kilter sense of humor -- and maybe, just maybe a tendency to perhaps desire to bend things to our wishes.
OK- we're control freaks.
Give us a massive project in shambles, and we'll whistle happily while we take it apart and put it all back together.
Take something we've carefully constructed and make it chaos - we'll get cranky.
Immediately after last year's Eggstravaganza ended, Cheryl was planning for this year. There is not likely a day between then and now that she didn't adjust the plan or improve the 70-kid private egg hunt in some small way.
It's a much beloved, multi-generation holiday traditon that runs like an atomic clock.
I've been planning Jessica and Michael's first trip to Buffalo since shortly after she told me they were dating. Talk of engagement started a year later and the actual trip was booked a few months ago - tying in, of course, with Eggstravanganza.
Ideally I would have liked Fourth of July weekend, out at the cottage, all the relatives there, temperature 78 degrees, clear blue skies, low humidity, first tomatoes in from the garden, an exhiliarating (but safe) private fireworks display - but since I haven't seen Jessica in nearly two years -- Easter weekend was just fine.
I tried not to overschedule by blocking occassional intervals for spontaneity. The grid lined up so nicely.
I was telling Cheryl about it last weekend, sitting in her kitchen within a few feet of the carefully-stacked-sorted- and-catalogued egg hunt prizes.
Yes, we knew at that time that the long-range forecast said snow, but that wouldn't happen. It couldn't happen. Neither one of us had in on the grid.
Just got word they cancelled opening day for the Bisons because of the snow and ice today. The sportcasters last night joked that both the Sabres and Bisons had home ice advantage.
I'm not laughing.
And I'm guessing Cheryl is not her perky self.
Jessica and Michael will be here in less than 26 hours. The egg hunt is in 44 hours.
But who's counting?
We'll just go with the (frigid) flow...
And if you believe that one -- I just got the most fascinating email from a Nigerian billionaire ....
