Sewer - um, seamstress

I guess now I know why they don't call them sew-ers.

I'm mostly finished with LB's Halloween costume. I've learned something, or perhaps realized something this go around.

I love being able to say that I made LB's costume. I am proud of the fact that I didn't just buy him some piece of crap from the Halloween store. That said, I don't particularly enjoy the process of making his costumes. I don't think I'm very good at it, and it seems to take me a lot longer than I think it should.

I've never taken a sewing class and so struggle with doing things exactly right; this time, even though I thought I was being really really careful, I STILL managed to sew one really long seam the wrong way and needed to take it out and redo it. I constantly have to check every detail and look up what they mean when they say topstitch vs. stay stitch vs. baste. And I always see the flaws that I know are there even though most other people don't, but they're there!!

I wonder if taking a class would help me to get better or perhaps if sewing more than once every few years might help too.

Those of you who do sew well and regularly (you know who you are), first I'm impressed with the skill that it takes to do the sewing WELL and that you clearly have. Do any of you have any thoughts or suggestions on making my sewing experience less miserable?

Oh, and as a footnote, LB has already chosen what he wants to be next year, a train engineer, which, I believe, will require no sewing on my part.
