Austin, Texas.
Sam and I walked, actually he half-walked half-ran, to the skateboard shop in the mall. Today he is 11 years old. I'm in Austin to celebrate. Today we are buying a new Tony Hawk skateboard and whatever accessories he wants. And he wants a lot. I'm not sure who's more excited, Sam or me! He carefully chooses the best components with the help of a few teenage boys hanging out in the shop. Interesting to witness the almost reverent handing down of knowledge from these 16-18 year old skaters to the young 11 year old. They winked and made obvious efforts to speak very respectfully and seriously, giving him sage advice. Sam, animated and excited, waited for the staff to put his new skateboard together. Later, as we left the shop, one of the young men whispered to me, "He chose exactly the right stuff" and smiled. I was audience to a number of tricks, ollies, and grinds when we got home. Birthday cake and much celebrating. When I drove away end of day, Sam was still surfing his Tony Hawk and smiling broadly as he waved goodbye. Happy Birthday, my beloved young skater Sam.
