Lexy had to work with me in her class this evening. Bill had to meet with a late client. I was pretty nervous and eventually, exactly as I feared, did incur the wrath of the trainer. Lisa ran Lexy before class to tire her out just enough to get her more workable and attentive in class but it’s a hard point to find. This time she was too tired and about halfway through class she no longer cared for even her favorite treats and looked at me to say, “I’m done for tonight.” Problem was that class wasn’t over. As the trainer approached, barking her routines, and faced with a suddenly disinterested canine student, I whispered. “Lexy, sit!” Trainer whirls around. Trainer yells, “Did I just hear that? What did I tell you? Did you just give that dog a command without having eye contact? Now what did she just learn ‘sit’ means? Nothing! That’s what she just learned sit means!” Lisa is shrinking behind me. Lexy looks at me with a, “well, what’d ya expect?” Okay, well, I know that’s not true. Lexy beautifully obeys sit whether verbal or hand signal. At that point, she was too tired…just didn’t feel like it. Bottom line: Lexy A, Mom C.
