The Institute for Civility in Government, that is. What a needed and inspiring concept. A grassroots, non-partisan organization whose mission is “reduce polarization in society by focusing on the very public civility (or lack of it!) in the governing process. The Institute facilitates dialogue, teaches respect, and promotes civility.” Two Presbyterians who led groups of Presbyterians from 35 counties in Southeast Texas to legislative conferences from 1991 to 1998 saw the light. Drawing participants from both sides of the aisle, the need for civility was clear. The need for each participant to learn civility in responding to those with opposing views would be crucial both in conveying their positions in a way that could be heard and in listening respectfully to other positions to increase their own understanding. Thus began the dialogue and eventually the organization.
We were fortunate to have these two organizers, Cassandra Dahnke and Tomas Spath, as our Sunday School speakers last week and to listen to them share their lively experiences. When I consider the current Katherine Harris hoopla and the rather uncivil responses from multiple members of both parties these last few days, one can only hope that we can all learn to act like grown-ups who can not only respectfully discuss our views without attacking each other but (and here’s a thought) actually allow others to think differently from us. And what about just being still. Sometimes you just don’t need to get into it, if you know what I mean. I absolutely believe in taking a stand (once fully educated about said stand) and I am passionate about my beliefs. But I hope I’m never too close-minded to at least consider the other side and do so respectfully. Kudos to Tom and Cassandra. check out their website!
