My practice is multi-faceted and one facet is the work I do as a Parent Coordinator for families in HIGH-CONFLICT custody issues ~ usually the aftermath of a bitter divorce. The client profile is always the same: parents returning to court month after month to wrangle over drop-off times, holiday visits, child-care duties and the color of socks the child should wear. Attorneys grown frustrated with constant or midnight calls with these repeated court appearances flooding judicial dockets. The reality is that a very small percentage of cases use up an inordinate amount of resources of the court. The courts hate these cases, the lawyers hate these cases. As one attorney said, "We're looking for any port in the storm." Mostly, these parents are just so busy fighting each other that they fail to ever consider what's best for their children. As a parent coordinator, my job is to teach these parents to put their children first. First I have to get them to remember they have children. That usually requires getting them to separate rooms (did I say HIGH CONFLICT?) if for no other reason than to stop the yelling and put the finger-pointing digits in the pockets. Then we begin....
