People Who Worry, Worry Me

I have little patience with worriers and drama-kings/queens. We have enough real challenges in our lives that I see no need to go around emphasizing negatives, expecting disasters and encouraging cynics. I’ve lived and worked with both kinds in my life, the peacemakers and the drama misters. Give me the peacemakers. My friend used to have two sayings that may seem simplistic to those more attune but which seriously changed my life. First: I’m not late till I’m late. (Gnawing nails because the meeting begins in 9 minutes and I’m still on the freeway simply means….I’m not late yet….not for 9 more minutes…and most of the time I’m walking in the door at that 9 minute mark.) Second and similarly related: You don’t have a problem till you have one. (as much as my mind would like to go dwell on the expected upcoming pain of the removal of the last surgical drain tomorrow, I will harness it back to today) I was reminded of these truths at Church in our study of the book of Matthew. How many times have my faith and thoughts been clear, only to allow the world’s beliefs to cloud my thinking, breeding confusion and fear. We are instructed not to worry about our lives, to “just be” and find that in the release of worry we are able to breathe, trust and relax, then follow. And find all is well. Sometimes we need to stop swimming upstream for awhile and turn over and float. This doesn’t mean we aren’t to use good adult sense and be naïve. My good friend from church had surgery two days prior to mine this week and while trying to remove an appendix, they found extensive colon cancer and removed a number of her organs. Yet I am blessed to know this woman who remains so positive and is busy making plans to follow whatever medical directives of what she is to do next. Have faith, follow, and for goodness sakes, live while you’re here.

This seems so clear to the children. Visiting with my Austin grandson a few days ago, I was amazed at how he is able to just let things be and how at ease his 13 year old sense of humor is. My oldest Cypress grandson was reminding me again this morning via phone how important it is to him that I be at his Championship (baseball) Game if there is one and of course, he “knows” there will be one. Such faith and positive beliefs, I believe, will serve them well. As Matthew says, “So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s troubles (the real ones) will be enough for today.” Amen to that.
