Once upon a time, a young Mayan boy was spotted by some Presbyterians who were greatly impressed with him. They saw great potential in this boy and began to help and nurture him especially in providing real help toward the education he dreamed of. The boy, Jose, was so grateful for their help and the opportunities they made possible that he studied very hard and eventually became a physician. He returned to his village in Xocenpich, Yucatán, and opened a clinic where he has been working long hours every day for many years. Jose is now in his early 80's and, in spite of having a leg amputated within this last year, he continues to serve his village at the clinic every day. His oldest son, Pablo, is the pastor of the second largest church in Merida. Our church has sent mission teams down at least twice over the years to help build, paint, and offer medical help (once I'm told, three physicians were recruited to go along). Today in Xocenpich, in addition to the clinic, there is a Bible School and a training center for nurses and lay pastors. Our church passed a resolution to be in a partnership relationship with Pablo's church well over a decade ago.
As we get ready to celebrate our blessings and abundance on our Thanksgiving holiday, I'm remembering our friends in other countries who are both struggling with and ministering to others. If only those old Presbyterians could have seen the miraclous ripple effect their helping that one little boy would someday make. The following update comes from our small "partner in mission" church, ministered by Pablo, in Merida. A letter from Rev. Pablo Estrella: Our region of Tabasco, Mexico, has suffered great damage. Many churches disappeared under the floodwaters and people have lost properties and lands. Here in Merida, many churches are getting together to help them. Our church is a relief center and we are packing lots of meals, clothes and medicines. I can’t believe how much people are responding to the invitation to help, bringing all things needed. We keep the church open 12 hours each day. Pray for us, Pablo On November 19 Pablo’s church was expecting to ship two 20-ton trucks with the gathered things. God is good.
