2008-03-10 8:47 PM Spring Break grandchildren's visit Read/Post Comments (0) |
Here come the Austin grandchildren, out on Spring Break, giving me a great excuse for a day out of the office. We begin with a visit to Nana's for lunch then head to the museum district to see dinosaurs, as promised. Seven-year-old Lilly is enthralled with said dinosaurs while 13-year-old Sam is studying the magnificent collection of shells. He teaches me all about squid and blue whales. We talk about the half-grown 330-pound female colossal squid found a few years back (I think 2002-03) off the coast of New Zealand. We learn that the colossal squid finds food by literally glowing in the dark, deep waters to light up prey for its massive eyes which are the size of dinner plates--the biggest of any animal. It has eight arms and two tentacles that have up to 25 teeth-like hooks -- deeply rooted into muscle and able to rotate 360 degrees. The hooks not only hold fish for the squid's two parrot-like beaks, but also are used to fend off attacks from the hungry sperm whales. He tells me that his class studied how the bodies of dead sperm whales often bear the scars from the suckers and tentacles of giant squid and pointed out art work depicting such on the museum wall. The docent said he thought another colossal squid was found last year near Antartica. The provocative piece of this is that the colossal squid (the earlier one) was found near the surface. They are supposed to live way way deep. So if that one could be found near the surface, it begs the question of what other new species might be living at 3000 ft. We watched the IMAX Sea Monsters movie and spent some time with the CSI exhibit but ran out of time prior to really getting to solve a CSI crime. A quick stop back by my office, which the kids wanted to see, and they were off and on their way to see more family. Another great day with grandchildren!
