2003-08-24 9:20 AM "Shaker Heights" Review Mood: Worth Renting Read/Post Comments (0) |
I witnessed the premiere of Project Greenlight's "The Battle of Shaker Heights" this past friday and it was... charming. The story is about this 17 year old boy and his fascinations with reinacting civil war battles. It's an interesting coming of age story. The editing was choppy at times which made the movie harder to follow. The best performance goes to Bill Sadler, who plays Kelly's (Shia Laboeuf) father. He was the only one that kept to the truth of the story while all the other actors were too busy focusing on how impressed they were with themselves. Shia was charming at times, but found him shallow. This character clearly wasn't too much of a stretch for him. The movie itself is only 80 minutes...kinda short. I only wanted more because I desperately wanted to like the characters and was only given enough in the movie to see a glimpse into their lives, even the lead.
Kudos to Efram and Kyle, the directors for tackling a big storyline. It's so hard when hollywood wants to cater to the market, rather than trust in why we explore art in the first place...to tell the story.
Artsy Lady gives this film 2 stars.
