This weekend I had the luxury of seeing the New York City Ballet's spring season "Balanchine 100" in memory ofcourse of the artist himself. First off, a quirky story, after all...this is me!
I had an extra ticket and no one to go with me. (Yes, I know suddenly I sound very sad. Believe me it worked out well). Anyway, I got to Lincoln Center and there were a slew of people wanting unwanted tickets so I had to fight people off for my single and I chose an old lady to be my date. When I got to my seat I realized I was surrounded my old ladies...it was crazy. I became the granddaughter they never had...they were competing on who could offer me the best candy and the most stimulating conversation. It was insane...but fun! I wish my mom could have joined me! The ballet was beautiful...3 numbers. What sets Balanchine apart from other choreographers is the fact that he was also a musician. Therefore the storytelling in his dances were that much more specific and engaging to watch. Balanchine was one of the first choreographers to integrate dance successfully with Mozart. This set the scene for the first number. It was classically done from the music to the Russian ballet technique. The second number was my absolute favorite. It was a story told after the fall of Rome and how destruction impacts 3 couples...how in the end they all needed each other to survive. The last ballet combined both choreography by Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, the two founding members of the New York City Ballet's season. It was called "The Four Temperments" and I found the history more fascinating actually than the dance. Balanchine invited musicians over to his house and while they played he comprised the ballet depending on the mood of the music. It was yet another wonderful dance performance. ABT (American Ballet Theater)'s spring season should be coming up soon. I'm very excited for that! HAPPY LATE MOTHERS DAY TO ALL THE MOMMIES!!!
