2005-05-24 8:01 PM SWEET CHARITY REVIEW Mood: 5+ STARS and that's just for Christina Applegate Read/Post Comments (0) |
Sweet Charity is one of the best shows on the Broadway stage I've seen in years!
It just opened and what an opening. Christina Applegate plays the title role of Charity and she is an absolute "triple threat". She wowed me. She made a brilliant Charity ...it was a great side to see of her. The setting is 1960s New York, the music was exciting, and the choreography kept close to Bob Fosse...as it should. Denis O'Hare plays Christina's opposite and love interest, Oscar Lindquist and the two of them brought incredible life and energy to the stage whenever they were on together. Ernie Sabella stars as the sleezy owner of the dance hall who in the midst of his scummy character, has a heart of gold for his dancing girls. Paul Schoeffler plays the movie star Vittorio Vidal whose comic timing and boisterous charisma has the audience falling head over heals for him. These four actors deserve unbelieveable praise for their hard work and genuine flair for storytelling. I will tell you...I was most disappointed in the two ladies playing Charity's best friends..Nickie and Helene. These are such fun characters to play and they were so boring. The dancers themselves for the most part were incredibly boring. It was really upsetting. Technically, the dancing was very good. I just...couldn't wait for them to get off-stage. Overall, the show was great...fantastic! Well worth the $100 unless your TDF like me and get orchestra seats for $30. :) Please don't hate me.
