2008-01-19 5:54 PM to the edge and back to the edge of the U.S. and back again...
OMG...it was a nasty, gray, ugly day, but dammit, i went to the beach. i didn't stay there too long. as you can see, the skies were angry. there were a few people out on the shores (dressed like they were further up north than here) but it was fantastic. most of all, no freakin' people. the sand however, was awful. it looks like it's mostly chewed shells, and a darker brown than i've seen...but i loved it. i took this route on the way to the flea market, following mapquest, i should have only had a few blocks to go to get to my final destination. what i ended up doing was going through old st. augustine, back on the bay side. OMG...i can't wait to get my camcorder and start bringing all this to life. i drove along a1a (which turned into something else) but i ended up in old town st. augustine. i passed the old san marco (i think) fort, really a fortress, and when i came back by (because the road dead-ended at of all things an assisted living place) i had to turn around and go back, but as i passed back by, they were shooting off the canons (Cannons?) for visitors. and my oh my, that street has the most lovely spanish inspired villas...omg! i was surprised to see many places up for sale (anyone have an extra mill or two?) so back to the mapquest...it told me to take king street to (oh yeah) martin luther king, jr...well, as what is usually true in most towns/cities, even the historic high-priced ones, yes, that was all houses owned by black folks. they are pretty lucky to be so close to the bay and the historic part of st. augustine, and as i was traveling down that street, i see many many places for rent...hmmmm, me thinks i will have to check into a few because one of them was a two-bedroom and i'll live in a place like that if i'm close to where i want to be close to. but, the flea market was nowhere to be found. so, not being a man, i pulled into a shell station and asked for directions. basically, mapquest sent me into st. augustine when i didn't have to go (i don't care, i went to the beach!) i could have just hopped I-95 and been there much quicker. live and learn and now i know. honestly, the flea market was great! so much better than i could have hoped for. my weakness is glass. old glass, glass without seams. and before i was even half way through, i'd spent over half my money. i had to leave behind a few treasures. but now i know how to get there, which booths have the best stuff and those that can be bargained down. all this "antique" glass works towards a future plan of mine. i won't say too much now, as to not jinx it, but i'm kind of excited. anyhow, i went to this one booth and i found the most wonderful deep red vase. the tag on it said "50's" as in from the 50's. what was most amazing was several years ago (nearly seven or so) i found the exact same vase at a flea market in north carolina. after bargaining the man down (thanks to the help of the girl who worked there also) i got it for two dollars more than what i paid in nc, but five dollars less than what he was asking. i now have a set (which will eventually be in a bathroom that is big enough to house both of them) the one from nc is just the tiniest bit fatter in shape and the glass a tiny, tiny bit thicker, but they look like a matched set. i noticed that they did have a pair there (thinner than the one i have and the one i bought) so i might have to snag that set when i go back (and now i know the man is willing to bargain)i knew, somehow, when i saw that vase in nc that it was something special. no seams in the glass! very important. and i found soooo many other great pieces. this may very well become my new habit. man, i love a good flea market. (and to think, i still have to check out the one closer in jacksonville) as i said, i have a plan for my flea market addiction... so pretty soon, really soon, i hope, i will be getting my domain and start, basically, marketing myself and my wares. at any rate...do you know what i like best about my red hair? it brings out the green in my eyes... i hope ya'll's day was as good as mine! ;-) Read/Post Comments (3) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
