It's not going away. But some of it's getting better.

House Passes USA Patriot Act Extension by Larry Abramson

All Things Considered, July 21, 2005 · By a vote of 257-171, the House of Representatives votes to extend parts of the USA Patriot Act that are due to expire at the end of 2005.

14 of these 16 have become permanent. The other two, "one provision dealing with business records and another allowing "roving" wiretaps" will expire in two years. Maybe.

Ever wondered what's in the Patriot Act? It's really long. Here's one that's more summarized. In better news, the Sneak and Peek section was amended. Here's the text of that. From what I have gleaned, the amendment was to deny funds to carry out the priveledged searches under section 213. I don't know if it's truly "dead", but there's a lot of good speeches in there. Here's a nice snippet:

"Being secure at the expense of our freedom is no real security. Like many Idahoans who have come to me with their concerns about the USA PATRIOT Act and in passionate defense of their freedoms, we must continue to examine our actions to correct our mistakes to guard against the apathy or the indifference to safeguarding our liberties."
