I was over on Paul Levine's website and he was talking about his favorite summer meal, which is too fancy for me, and, uh, includes fish. I like fish OK, but it's not high on my foodie list. There's a restaurant here in town, Red Knapp's American Grill, that serves seafood, steaks, pasta, pizza, etc., and it's a very good restaurant. Their specials are almost always fish and my wife almost always orders it. She loves fish. Especially white fish and salmon. Our all-time favorite restaurant is Sagebrush Cantina, a Mexican restaurant. It was in nearby Lake Orion until it burned down about 2 years ago. They reopened in Fenton and we make the pilgrimage about once a month--it's 35 miles or so away. They've rebuilt and should reopen in Lake Orion this summer--soon, we hope--and we can go back to our family's "Sagebrush Sunday," where we would hit the place right around the time they opened on Sunday at noon. Favorite meal there? For me it's probably the beef burrito and cheese enchillada combination. They use seasoned shredded beef instead of hamburger or ground beef, and it makes all the difference in the world. My wife likes their fajitas. My eldest son is a tamale fan and my youngest goes with the cheese enchillada. I can also go with burrito & taco plate, or I like their chicken nachos. As I mentioned in Paul's blog, there's another restaurant in town called Calloway's. They've got a huge menu and I've never had anything bad there (my wife has--stay away from their burritos). They're more or less on or across the street from a golf course, so most of their items have some sort of golf theme, and one of the sandwiches near and dear to my heart is called The Tour Card, which is honey-glazed ham on a grilled soft pretzel. Their italian sandwich, which is one of their lunch specials, is also excellent, although I've only had it twice. We like to go to local restaurant versus chains. I'm not opposed to Chili's or Applebees or Montana's or Olive Garden, but I prefer these homegrown restaurants and the unique things they offer. And it makes me kind of hungry just thinking about it.
