2004-10-01 9:05 AM Why Oscar? Previous Entry :: Next Entry On Wednesday night, I went to a career-building event offered by Women in Film with Jennise. Erring on the side of caution, we left Burbank prepared for traffic delays, and ended up getting at the venue while they were still doing the sound check. We killed time by perusing the Variety magazine there, and in it was an interesting article about the Academy Award.
I never thought about it, but why isn't it just called an Academy Award? Where did it get the name "Oscar?" According to the Variety article, Bette Davis was looking at the statuette (which is, for some reason, of a naked man), and loudly opined that the statuette's derriere looked like the ass of her ex-boyfriend, named Oscar. The nickname stuck and there you have it. The event itself was semi-useful. Clearly many people there were enthralled by the idea of taking responsibility for your own career, empowering yourself to move forward, and not being afraid to re-examine your own goals and soul, to strive for something that you truly enjoy. It's a lesson I learned a while back, so that part was not so useful. However, the speaker was very good, and I don't consider it a total waste of time. Sometimes it's useful to be reminded that I do know these things about myself. Affirmation isn't a bad thing to have. This just in http://www.oscar.com/legacy/statuette.html By virtue of the first use of the nickname, Ms. Bette was probably not the originator. Drat. Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
