Five More Questions

Christopher (not Mr.) Rowe asked me the following amusing questions:

1. "Bridgeport?" said I, pointing.

No, Southport, Maine actually. It's where I was taught to sail -- in little dinghies for kids to learn to avoid capsizing and ramming other dinghies. The class wasn't great preparation for a storm in the Bermuda Triangle, but it managed to impart the basic skills needed to avoid looking the fool (important for teen sailors everywhere) when we departed on our own sailing vessel for two years of wandering.

2. As fully as you can, describe the character and psychological state of Nick Adams in the last story in the volume. Tell how Hemingway uses the physical setting to help reveal what Nick feels. (We might call the setting used in this way the psychological landscape to indicate that the physical world in some manner reflects or suggests the inner world of the protagonist.)

As the volume you reference is not named, I have no idea how to answer your two-part question.

3. Parlez-vous français?

Je parle très peu français. Spanish would've been a hell of a lot more useful for my later move to Texas.

4. Who put the bop in the bop-she-bop-she-bop, who put the dip in the dip-de-dip-de-dip?

Bip, of course. Everyone knows that.

5. So, if I were to mess with Texas, what would happen?

Fines, imprisonment, and, later, execution. A harsh land, Texas....
