So I'm Torn. I get that the San Francisco mayor has ordered the clerk's office to issue marriage licence without regard to gender as a way to directly challenge a California law. It's civil disobedience and I'm totally with it. But I'm somewhat...I dunno... lost on how to support, or whether I support a move like Rosie O'Donnell's to run off and get married purely to spite the President's declaration in support of Constitutional ban on gay marriage. I guessing I'm hedging on something that only has a hair's breadth of difference. But I'm not crazy about Getting married as a way civil disobedience, but I'm fine with Allowing people to get married in order to defy what I believe is an unjust law. Since, one way or the other, I'm deeply suspicious of marriage I don't feel that gay marriage impacts my life one way or the other. But wouldn't kicking off your marriage for political reasons just put the whole context of your union on different grounds from the one being argued that homosexuals can have the same powerful, loving relationship that hets can have? When Dr King was doing his thing folks were politicizing their lunch - eating in mixed groups at segregated lunch counters. Since one of the vital things any minority needs to show to make it's point valid is that being accorded the same rights and priveledges as the majority is that said minority will not waste said rights and priveledges and in fact put them to good use. This isn't fair or equal, but it is the way that it is. So I'm torn. You? Read/Post Comments (7) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
