It's dark and cold and wet out. Not raining, necessarily. But I'm terribly inclined to stay in, reading Harry Potter 7, drinking coffee, feet by the little space heater and music player set to random all day long. Though I really should get some exercise. I really should. I want it to rain. Really rain. This near-rain reminds me of my childhood. I grew up in a drought that last some five odd years. I dunno, I was a kid. It was several years, though, of conserving water, learning about the water cycle with help from Ricky the Rambunctious Raindrop, sweeping the sidewalk instead of watering it, washing the car from buckets, turning off the tap when washing dishes or brushing my teeth. Rain days were very, very few. I learned to read the forecasts as 70% chance of rain = maybe yes, maybe no. Probably no. 40% or less was nothing, maybe a cloud rubbing up against a mountain. So it's not surprising now that yesterday the forecast was for light rain today and tomorrow and heavy rain on Thursday. But today it reads: light rain today, clouds tomorrow, light rain on Thursday. I don't mind it terribly. I'm of desert stock. But it means I'm not good with cold, dark days. They make me want to hibernate. Ah yes, and I have Harry Potter 7. Finally. The Harry Potter Series - books and movies both make me want to head back to the UK PDQ. And I know it's really dark and really cold there right now, but it would a foreign dark and cold and therefore...well, really something. I've only just started HP7, but I'm enjoying it as much as the others so far. I think if there's one thing that I do like about the series above other fantasy serieses (serii?) is that the antagonists have to choose to be malevolent. They aren't wholly creatures made by the antithesis to Good. They didn't slide in from alternate plane of reality, intending to benight all of humanity. They started out as people with a panoply of choices, just like everyone else, and instead of going with a better nature they gave in to envy, avarice, power-madness, pride etc and allowed themselves to be corrupted by the natural temptations every person faces. Though the magic flies high and fast, they're no different from humans from Gengis Khan to Pol Pot and all the incidental Hitlers along the way. Nifty. Another argument for staying in and relaxing: very soon all my evenings and weekends are going to go down the drain as I'm highly likely to take on a stage managing gig. Rehearsals have already started and I'm to in and meet the director tomorrow night. The work begins in earnest on 2 January and that will probably be more full than February. Though in Feb I have to rehearse and nail down my own play. And of course there's that whole looking for a job thing.
