Marriage is love.

The smell of Spring in my humble abode...ancient cat pee.

The coming of Spring in Chicago is the coming of humidity...not Houston level humidity (at least not yet), but more than the skin petrifying dryness of winter. One added 'benefit' of this increased humidity is that odors are more present...I don't understand the science...I just know that it is true.

The lovely couple that preceded me in my little house had three cats that shared 1 litter box. The box was placed in the carpeted vestibule on the first floor between the den/living room, the half-bath, and the basement stairwell. Apparently, they missed...often.

The window in that vestibule is the principle window for cross ventilation in this post-furnace, pre-air conditioning season.

Unfortunately, warming temps and increased humidity have once again freed the ghosts of cat pee past, and with the window open, the entire first floor smells like the men's room at the Winter Garden Theatre after intermission. (Bonus points for knowing the veiled broadway reference.)

Last year I tried the "saturate the area with antibacterial Febreeze" suggestion I got from a cat-owning friend, and that helped some...but clearly that did not really resolve the issue.

I don't want to ask the church to replace the carpet and pad in that part of the house, for it is only 5 years old.
But I also can't spend all summer with it like this...

Suggestions?
