2005-09-11 10:20 PM When in Our Music.....the songs of Katrina If you didn't catch Kanye West on the one hour special on Friday, you missed something special...though at first you thought it would never happen as feedback marred the opening....but as one who doesn't like rap...Jesus Walks...was awesome.
But then came Neil Young..."When God Made Me" may be the simplest, most touching piece of popular theology produced so far this century... And then over on the BET Special...Aaron Neville barely making it through Amazing Grace....of the millions of singers that stretch old melodies and embellish them, none is more masterful...more delicate with it, than the often understated but deeply moved and moving Mr. Neville...You could see and hear the way he clung to this song and its promises like those cops in Waveland clung to the bushes to stay alive... We sing...not just to raise money...but we as a people sing, because that is how we buttoned down Americans can express poetic emotions in a socially acceptable context... So let us sing on...
