2006-06-07 12:49 PM Defense of Marriage Amendment post-mortem So, 49 Senators voted for the Amendment, including 2 Democrats (Byrd and Nelson).
I have a couple of questions for some of those who were included among the Yeas... First, for Christopher Bond (R-MO), Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and John W. Warner(R-VA), the four of you voted in favor of the amendment and are all on record as seeking to protect the "sanctity" of marriage, and for stating religious grounds for at least part of your opposition to gay marriage. So here’s my question: If you are such strong believers in a Biblical approach to marriage, how is it that all four of you are divorced and remarried in direct contravention of Jesus’ teaching? And correct me if I’m wrong Senator Warner, but you qualify for that club twice, don’t you? Oh, and Elizabeth Dole (R-NC), you’ve cited the same grounds yet you married a divorced man. What gives? Also, at least two of you (Kit Bond and Kay B. H.) have said that heterosexual marriage is essential to nurture, raise, and, indeed, create families…that procreation is an essential aspect of marriage. So senators, do you think Senator Dole’s marriage should be deemed void because she is incapable of having children and knew that when she married former Senator Bob Dole? If not, why not? Don't get me wrong, folks. Both of my parents were divorced before they got married. I know scads of people who are better off divorced than in the marriages they have now left. My issue is with the hypocracy. Even so, hypocracy aside, what these 49 folks voted for was wrong...and I wonder, will any of them have to pay for it in November? Doubtful. Still...at least it's dead...in the Senate. The House votes later this summer. Read/Post Comments (4) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
