2006-06-17 11:59 PM Notes from Birmingham 1. I was sent here to get something done. Today that work was dealt an enormous blow when the committee assigned to review our proposal voted 30-28 to recommend that it be defeated. It's not over, but it now turns to the plenary, where it will be hard to overcome a negative committee recommendation.
2. I worked with 18 other wonderful people in doing our work and we think that we did the best job we could do under the circumstances. 3. Today I heard a professor of Bible who is a member of my denomination, who serves in a seminary of my denomination...but who is not a minister...publicly announce that it is not possible to interpret scripture as doing anything but condemning homosexuality, that the Bible, and Jesus, announce a "mandatory two sex" ethic for all relationships. He presented it in such a way as to say that any other interpretation is inconceivable. Funny....a majority of the Bible professors in our seminaries disagree....Is he so arrogant with them? 4. Last night, I got to sing the psalm in worship in front of about 800-1000 people...or maybe more or less...I couldn't tell...It was awesome. Tonight, I attended the ecumenical service...many fewer people...amazing music, a kick ass sermon by the UCC pastor who is North American President of the World Council of Churches. Worship has been the highpoint for me so far....that and seeing old friends...dozens of friends from Houston...from Atlanta...from Chicago...and the funniest thing is that I'm always standing with someone else I know when another person I know comes up...it's bizarre. 5. Yesterday when a supporter of a more inclusive church referred to the church as a garden in which all different kinds of flowers should be permitted to bloom...then a member of my own local ecclesial body...indeed the chair of Very Important Committee...then 'testified' that permitting glbt clergy would be like "planting cut flowers in the garden..why would we want that?" Grrrrr.... Tomorrow...sabbath...I need it. Read/Post Comments (8) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
