2006-07-05 7:22 PM Because God is Love, Right? August 6, LGBT folk from around the world are supposed to be gathering in Jerusalem...a year after the event was originally planned...for WorldPride.
This week, 50 religious leaders--Christian, Muslem, and Jewish--were invited by right-wing politicians to address the Knesset's Interior Committee. And here is what some of them said... Yehuda Levin of the Rabbinical Alliance of America in New York City: "I promise there's going to be bloodshed -- not just on that day, but for months afterward. In America, we are outraged and disgusted over this event. There are millions of people who, with their bodies, souls and money, will stand against this . . . I will be here afterwards to remind you and to say, 'I warned you and you did nothing,'" Ibrahim Sarsur, Knesset member and United Arab List Ta'al party member: "If gays will dare approach the Temple Mount during the parade, they will do so over our dead bodies." Rabbi Menachem Froman, rabbi in a West-Bank Jewish settlement opined, "This could bring bloodshed here in the country and all over the world." What exactly is planned for WorldPride? Major events include a Multifaith LGBT Clergy Conference, a Pride March through the streets of Jerusalem, an outdoor festival, Human Rights Day, LGBT Health Day, an International LGBT Youth conference, an LGBT Film Festival, and the Keshet Gaava (an LGBT Jewish organization) annual conference. Christian Friends for Israel, a US-based Evangelical group issued this statement: "The decision to hold this event in Jerusalem can only be seen as a calculated and confrontational act meant to provoke and offend those who adhere to timeless, biblical moral standards in the very place they hold most dear." Give me a break! I certainly pray that if the event goes forward, there is no violence. But does it strike anyone else as strange that most of the voices lifting up violence are U.S. fundamentalists and those they support in Israel? So who will be responsible for any violence that may happen at WorldPride? Those marching for human rights or those who are foaming at the mouth inciting their followers to violence?
