2006-06-07 2:43 PM How does one "Blog"? Previous Entry :: Next Entry Mood: Sore Read/Post Comments (1) It seems I rarely make entries into this blog, though I think about it and on it a lot. When it comes down to it, it seems I just don't have that much to say.
Yet I know I do. I read other blogs and they sound like slices of the bloggers' lives, which is good - doesn't seem like anything but small talk. You know what I mean: "Took the kids to school, talked to the teacher, Billy has some issue or other, this is what I think about it". Or, "I moved into a new house today and these are the problems we're encountering". These sorts of things can be interesting. Like reading some lightweight novel for entertainment value. There are some that seem almost like advertisements for a product: a book, a film, a CD, something else. These are interesting, too. I find Keith Snyder's blog on his work as a filmmaker to be fascinating, moreso because I sort of "knew" Keith online before he had published his first book (but not before he had made some serious music). Then there are a few that are more controversial. They detail serious issues - and organize evidence pro or con, supporting some conclusion. They read like serious journalism in many cases. Also can be interesting, if you a.) agree with the arguments, or b.) are open-minded enough to not be threatened by hearing two sides of the story. I personally like reading these types of things. Trouble is, while I have opinions about a lot of issues, I'm not good at debating and don't have the command of the facts to refute someone else's positions or someone else's assertions contrary to my opinions. And making "small talk" seems to me, in MY case, to be sort of bragging. If I tell you about how well my kids are doing in school, it feels like bragging. Likewise with describing a new house, or the state of my practice. Safe topics for me? What I read. What I listen to. What I write. Sports. Occasionally some issue about my profession. Are these interesting to others? Seems not. Maybe I'll come up with some "theme" that will flow from entry to entry, and which will be of interest to others. Or maybe not. Maybe I'll quit trying. But anyway, here's one for the books. Read/Post Comments (1) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
