John the Eunuch, Space Chimps and Disney

I keep saying I was going to get to Eric Mayer's and Mary Reed's John the Eunuch series, and finally I've started book 1. So far, I'm enjoying it, but I'm not very far into it.

Today was an off-day for me. I get to spend the day with the kids. We just got back from seeing Space Chimps. It's a cuter movie than I thought it would be. Lots of little jokes, some aimed over the heads of my 6 and 8 year olds. Which was fine with me; gave me something to laugh at once in a while! Actually, it was fun.

Finished a bunch of Disney books recently. I read DISNEY WAR by James B. Stewart for a second or third time, then read a book by Pat Williams (the guy who helped to start the Orlando Magic of the NBA) on HOW TO BE LIKE WALT, then Bob Thomas' biography of Roy Disney (Walt's older brother and partner), entitled BUILDING A COMPANY: ROY O. DISNEY AND THE CREATION OF AN ENTERTAINMENT EMPIRE. Am I "Disney'ed" out? Just a little bit. It's fascinating to see how these two brothers worked together and played off each other to create something so successful. Individually, they never would have gotten to the heights they achieved. Roy would have probably been a successful banker, Walt probably working in Hollywood in some capacity...but not probably as the head of a major studio. (Though it wasn't so major when he started it...lots of risk went into the formation of Walt Disney Productions...)

What else? Oh, for Christmas I got a USB turntable, and I've finally gotten the software installed and the thing hooked up to the computer. I've been slowly but surely putting some of my old vinyl into digital form. I have some stuff, especially stuff by Chicago bands from the late 70's and 80's, that will never come out on CD. It's nice to preserve the tunes...if only for myself, since I seem to be the only person who much appreciates it.

Last, it looks like we may have a date for a jam session. If everything clicks, we're looking at August 23, a Saturday in about 3 1/2 weeks. I'll post updates on that session, including song lists, as I figure them out...

TTFN...
