What the heck am I doing online?

I was thinking about this today. I came into work, turned on the computer in my private office, and sat here, waiting for it to boot up. When it did, I double clicked on the Internet Explorer icon and pulled up my favorites. Then I started meandering around the web, going all my usual places.

Except that my usual places are getting less. For example, I always check out AOL's Cubs fan message board. But a couple days ago I went on there, and one of the folks, someone I consider an online friend and whose thoughts I respect and enjoy reading, was getting berated for his comments about our favorite team (he was questioning why Cubs GM Jim Hendry didn't put in a waiver claim on Brian Giles of the Padres, which seemed like a reasonable question to me, but apparently not to anyone else). It isn't the first time for him, and he'd had enough. He decided he wasn't going to post there anymore; it just wasn't fun for him anymore. And I realized that it really wasn't much fun for me, either. I get tired of reading posts that insult other posters and their comments. So I posted a note saying goodbye and saying that the lack of civility was ruining it for me. Why do something you don't enjoy?

So...one less destination. My other destinations are a Bulls message board on AOL, The Book and Candle Pub on the Delphi Forums, Mice Age, (a site devoted to Disney news) and here. This morning, there were no messages at the Bulls board, no activity at the Pub, and nothing too much happening at Mice Age. Thank goodness there were a few interesting journal entries here.

Sometimes, I wonder what I did before I had the web to meander about. Maybe I read and wrote more. Maybe I should try doing that again.
