2009-01-07 12:16 PM The Hand...update Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (5) Anyone remember a bad horror movie from, probably, the late 1970's called THE HAND? I think I saw it at a drive-in as part of a double bill, and I was probably inebriated when I saw it. (That's what we high school students did in the 70's - went to drive in movies either with a girl, or with a bunch of our friends, a couple of us sneaking in via the trunk of someone's car, and a lot of beer!)
Anyway, this post isn't about that bad movie. Just a quick update about my hand injury. I posted an entry last month regarding the injury last summer and the events of the last month...well, I got the CT scan, then I went back to the specialist. He informed me that, yes, it is broken, and no, it is NOT healing properly. But...at this point there are only two options. Leave as is, and hope for the best, or surgically fuse the bone so it stops hurting. He gave me a cortisone injection, which hurt far more than the hand was hurting for a couple of days, then the pain really eased up. I've had little to no pain most days with this thing, unless a gorilla (read: some male patients and friends) shakes my hand. Ever notice this? A lot of guys shake hands like they're trying to wrestle you to the ground! Like they want you to take a knee and yell, "Uncle!" I'm getting adept at offering my left hand, or grabbing their hand on the fingers before they can squeeze, because you never know when one of these guys is going to strike. It can be anyone! Heck, I may have been one of them myself. For a sort of wimpy guy, I have always had a firm handshake, and pretty strong hands...years of keyboard, guitar and drum playing, along with typing a lot and my work have given me a good grip and a lot of hand strength. I probably was one of those guys unknowingly trying to wrestle others to the ground. I go back next week, to see if the hand is healing any better, or whatever. Currently, with no pain, I doubt that I'll be doing anything surgical, even if he recommends it. I can't afford the time off now, and even if it ends up being more serious later, or more involved, hopefully, I'll be at a place financially and professionally where I CAN afford the time off.
